The Ugly Duckling = #AtoZfavbooks May challenge – Day 21

The Ugly DucklingThe Ugly Duckling by Ian Beck …

… Day 21 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

A retelling of the classic story, The Ugly Duckling, is the book for Day 21 of the #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

“Once upon a time there was a mother duck who had seven little ducklings. Six of them were soft and fluffy and yellow. The seventh duckling was different …”

My grandchildren love this story. We have a family of little ducklings on my pond at the moment, which has prompted much discussion about which one is the ‘ugly’ one that will grow  into a swan.

Ian Beck’s version has beautiful, gentle illustrations and just enough text for small children.

Sun Kisses Moon Hugs – #AtoZfavbooks May Challenge – Day 19

sun kisses moon hugsSun Kisses Moon Hugs by Susan Schaefer Bernardo  …

… Day 19 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Sun Kisses Moon Hugs is a very special book for Day 19 of the #AtoZfavbooks challenge. Written by Susan Schaefer Bernardo it has a simple but powerful message: love lasts forever.

“No matter how far apart we are,

I’ll always find ways to tell you I love you.”

Apart from being just right for cuddles before bedtime, Sun Kisses Moon Hugs is also ideal for supporting children going through  separation anxiety, divorce, loss, illness or other traumatic situations. It has a gentle story and lovely illustrations. This is a book you and your child will want to read over and over.

Launch day for Better Buckle Up

Better Buckle Up has finally been cleared for launch.

A book aiming to make car safety fun, follow Ollie as he drives a fire-engine, a racing car and even a rocket … all whilst wearing his seat-belt, of course.

At the time of writing it’s only in ebook edition although I’m hoping/praying/begging that the print version will be available in the next few days. (See here for the reasons behind the delay)

I hope you’ll check out the book. It costs £2.12 to UK readers, $2.99 in the US and if you’re a member of Amazon Prime you and your child can read it for free.

Q is for Duck – #AtoZfavbooks May Challenge – Day 17

Q is for DuckQ is for Duck by Mary Elting …

… Day 17 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Q is for Duck by Mary Elting and Michael Folsom is an alphabet book with a difference. It’s my choice for Day 17 of the #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Here’s how it works.

“A is for Zoo. Why? Because Animals live in the Zoo.”

Brilliant 🙂

I really love this clever idea. It gets away from the usual list-style alphabet book, the text is funny and the illustrations have lots of detail to talk about. What more could you ask for?

Peter Rabbit – #AtoZfavbooks May Challenge – Day 16

Peter RabbitPeter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter …

… Day 16 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Peter Rabbit: a beautiful classic children’s book by one of the first authors to choose the self-publishing route, Beatrix Potter. She wrote so many books but I’ve always loved Peter Rabbit.

Generations of children have enjoyed the tale of Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. When Mrs Rabbit tells her children to be good and not get into mischief while she’s out, “Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor’s garden, and squeezed under the gate!”

It’s funny how much children like to read about characters who get into trouble. Peter has enthralled readers since it’s publication in 1902. It definitely belongs on every child’s bookshelf.

Oh the Places you’ll Go – #AtoZfavbooks challenge – Day 15

Oh the places you'll goOh the Places you’ll Go by Dr Seuss …

… Day 15 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Day 15 and it’s another Dr Seuss book on the #AtoZfavbooks challenge. Oh the Places you’ll Go has so many inspirational quotes crammed into it’s pages it’s more a motivational manual than a children’s story book.

Children love the rhyming text and Dr Seuss’ signature style illustrations and. let’s face it, adults enjoy the story too.

So, if you’re in need of a pep-talk on this Sunday morning, here’s a great animation to inspire you.

Noisy Bottoms – #AtoZfavbooks challenge – Day 14

Noisy BottomsNoisy Bottoms by Sam Taplin…

… Day 14 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Noisy Bottoms by Sam Taplin is a cheeky book for Day 14 of the #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

This book has a soundchip in which makes a variety of rather rude noises when pressed that are guaranteed to make everyone giggle.

It’s the story of Daddy Bear and Little Bear going for a walk in the forest where they meet a rabbit, a mouse and a fox who are all afflicted with rather noisy bottoms. “What a noisy bottom,” declares Little Bear. “I would never do that.” … until he does.

Curiously, my grandchildren prefer making the rude noises themselves rather than pressing the buttons but it’s a lot of fun and the illustrations are beautifully detailed to give us lots to talk about.

Mog and the Baby – #AtoZfavbooks Challenge – Day 13

Mog and the BabyMog and the Baby by Judith Kerr …

… Day 13 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

Day 13 and we’re halfway through the #AtoZfavbooks challenge already. There are seventeen stories by Judith Kerr about Mog the cat but Mog and the Baby is my all time favourite.

My children and I read Mog and the Baby until it literally fell to pieces. It’s the story of Mog whose normal happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Mrs Clutterbuck’s who wants to leave her baby with the family for a while.

“Are you sure my baby will be all right with your cat?” asks Mrs Clutterbuck.

“Oh yes, Mog loves babies,” says Mrs Mog.

The trouble is, Mog really doesn’t love babies at all. Despite this fact Mog manages to save the baby and becomes the hero of the day.

A lovely book that builds to a climax as the baby wanders off, ‘And there was a car coming!’

The Little Boy who Lost his Name – #AtoZfavbooks May Challenge – Day 12

Little Boy who lost his nameThe Little Boy who lost his Name …

… Day 12 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

The Little Boy who lost his Name is a very special entry in the #AtoZfavbooks challenge because it’s completely personalized with your child’s name.

In the story, the people that the little boy meets and the adventures he has are all determined by the letters in their name. So Max met a Mermaid with a comb tangled in her hair, an Aardvark eating ants and a pirate with a treasure map marked with a X. (He was particularly fond of the pirate.) A child with a longer name would get a longer story 🙂

The story was told in rhyme and had great pictures. I ordered one for my grandson and he thought it was very funny that the boy had the same name as he did.

As this has to be a print to order book, I did worry what the quality of the printing would be like but it’s superb; excellent colour and sturdy paper that takes the punishment that any book for children gets.

The books can be ordered from the LostMyName website. When you’re ordering you can see a preview of the book with the options for the letters in your child’s name which is a really great touch. ‘The Little Girl who lost her Name’ is available too.

Kiss Goodnight, Sam – #AtoZfavbooks May Challenge – Day 11

Kiss Goodnight SamKiss Goodnight Sam by Amy Hest …

… Day 11 May #AtoZfavbooks challenge.

‘It was a dark and stormy night on Plum Street …’ so starts Kiss Goodnight Sam by Amy Hest and my book choice for Day 11 of the #AtoZfavbooks challenge. (You wouldn’t believe how good I’m getting typing #AtoZfavbooks!)

This is a wonderful bedtime story that is a firm favourite in our house.

Mrs Bear is putting Sam to bed. She follows all his usual bedtime routines; drinking milk, tucking him in and arranging his friends under the covers etc. But Sam still isn’t ready to go to sleep. What has Mrs Bear forgotten? Why, Sam’s kiss goodnight, of course 🙂

The illustrations are warm and inviting and the text is gentle and fun. My grandson’s favourite line in the book is after Mrs Bear finally remembers and ‘bends down, kissing Sam once and twice and then twice more’ and Sam shouts, ‘Again!’ “Again” became a line we had to repeat a lot.

Your little one will definitely have sweet dreams after reading this book.
